Aviko Installs Electric Boiler at Lomm Factory to Cut Natural Gas Use and CO2 Emissions by 4800 Tonnes Annually
potatopro.comDutch potato processor Aviko installed a fully electric boiler at its Lomm production facility in the Netherlands on July 9, 2026. The e-boiler runs on 100% renewable electricity and will replace part of the site's natural gas steam generation. Aviko says the system will cut carbon dioxide emissions by at least 4,800 tonnes per year once fully commissioned in late 2026. The project required a major electrical infrastructure upgrade including a new high-voltage cable from the California substation and a new distribution station on site. Aviko worked with grid operator Enexis and local authorities to secure permits and additional capacity despite pressure on the Dutch grid. The company already uses 100% renewable electricity globally and targets a 45% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 with net zero by 2050. This is part of Aviko's broader factory electrification program. A similar project is underway at its Steenderen facility. The Lomm e-boiler is one of the company's largest investments in low-carbon manufacturing and shows how industrial heat electrification can move forward with utility and government cooperation.
