Aviation net zero goals at risk from SAF shortages, carbon credit gaps, and policy mismatches
travelandtourworld.comA new report highlights growing risks to aviation's net zero by 2050 target. Sustainable aviation fuel production is expected to reach only 2.4 million tonnes in 2026, less than 1% of global jet fuel demand. At the same time, CORSIA carbon credit supply is projected to cover only 38 million tonnes of the 213 million tonnes needed through 2026, leaving a 175 million tonne shortfall. Policy mismatches are compounding the problem. Governments are pushing consumption mandates faster than production infrastructure can scale. SAF prices are roughly three times conventional jet fuel, and compliance costs push effective prices even higher. E-SAF production capacity is 30 times below 2030 mandate requirements. Industry leaders argue for supply-first policies that prioritize building production capacity before expanding mandates.
