Aviation CO2 emissions projected to jump 87% by 2050 as demand outpaces efficiency gains
aviationbusinessnews.comAviation emissions are set to rise sharply unless demand growth is checked. A new report from IBA forecasts gross CO2 emissions from commercial passenger flights will jump from 843 million tonnes in 2025 to 1.58 billion tonnes by 2050, an 87% increase. The rise comes despite a 20% improvement in fleet emissions intensity, because passenger demand is expected to grow 134% over the same period. The report is a baseline projection, not a net-zero pathway. It excludes the impact of sustainable aviation fuel, carbon offsets, and market-based measures. Zero-emission aircraft are expected to make up only 0.3% of the global fleet by 2050. That means the industry's decarbonization goals depend heavily on policy action to scale SAF and other measures, which the report does not model.
