Global air travel is projected to triple by 2050, making decarbonization a critical challenge. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) identifies Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as the primary lever, expected to provide 55% of necessary CO2 reductions, while new engine technologies and airspace efficiency fill the remaining gap. While production technology for SAF exists, high costs remain a barrier, with synthetic fuels costing up to eight times more than fossil fuels. South Korea is implementing a mandatory 1% SAF blend by 2027 to align with international carbon reduction targets.
