Avantium and Klöckner Pentaplast partner to scale PEF food packaging films
packaginginsights.comAvantium has partnered with film producer Klöckner Pentaplast to advance PEF (polyethylene furanoate) food packaging. PEF is a plant-based polymer made from sugars, designed to replace petroleum-derived PET in food and beverage packaging. The deal pairs Avantium's FDCA production process with Klöckner Pentaplast's film extrusion capabilities to bring PEF closer to commercial use. PEF offers stronger oxygen and CO2 barrier properties than PET, which can extend shelf life for packaged foods. It is also fully recyclable, though questions remain about collection streams and cost per unit compared to conventional plastics. The partnership is part of Avantium's push to scale PEF beyond pilot stage, with its FDCA flagship plant in the Netherlands expected to supply commercial volumes.
