Avantium and Klöckner Pentaplast Partner to Advance PEF Food Packaging
packaginginsights.comAvantium has partnered with Klöckner Pentaplast to develop PEF (polyethylene furanoate) films for food packaging. PEF is a bio-based polymer that can be produced from plant sugars, offering a potential alternative to PET. The collaboration aims to bring PEF closer to commercial use, focusing on film applications that could reduce reliance on fossil-based plastics. The environmental benefit of PEF depends on several factors: the feedstock source, energy used in production, and end-of-life recyclability. While PEF has better barrier properties than PET, which can extend shelf life, the full lifecycle carbon footprint needs comparison. The partnership will need to address cost competitiveness and integration into existing recycling streams to deliver a genuine sustainability win.
