Austrian Airlines Reduces CO2 Emissions with AeroSHARK Bionic Surface Technology
travelandtourworld.comAustrian Airlines has implemented AeroSHARK technology on its Boeing 777 fleet to lower fuel consumption. The bionic surface film, inspired by shark skin, reduces aerodynamic drag by 0.7%, leading to a reduction of nearly 3,000 tons of CO2 emissions over one year of operation. Developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, the textured film is applied to the fuselage and engine nacelles. This efficiency gain saved approximately 930 tons of kerosene, demonstrating how material science can provide immediate, incremental carbon reductions in long-haul aviation.
