Sicona Battery Technologies has received a AUD 45 million grant from ARENA to build a commercial-scale plant in New South Wales for its silicon-carbon anode material, SiCx. The material can boost lithium-ion battery energy density by over 20% and cut charge times by more than 40% when blended with graphite. It is compatible with existing production lines, making it easier to scale. The first phase will produce up to 230 tonnes of SiCx per year, with plans to expand to 6,500 tonnes and eventually 26,500 tonnes annually. The company is working with steelmaker BlueScope to locate the facility at Port Kembla. Applications include EVs, AI data centers, drones, and power tools. The project aims to strengthen Australia's role in advanced battery manufacturing beyond raw mineral exports.
