Bellevue Gold, an off-grid Australian mine, has been chosen as the exclusive gold supplier for the regilding of St Paul's Cathedral in London. The mine gets 83.5% of its power from wind and solar, hit a monthly record of 93.8% renewables in February, and ran for 155 hours on renewable power alone this year. Its hybrid system includes 24 MW of wind, 27 MW of solar, and a 15 MW/33 MWh battery, with 24 MW of thermal backup.

Bellevue Gold getting the St Paul's contract because of its renewable-powered operation is a nice signal. The mine ran 83.5% on wind and solar over the FY and hit 93.8% in February. That is the kind of proof buyers are asking for.

The 'engines off' stat is the one to watch. 155 hours where the mine ran purely on wind, solar and battery means the hybrid setup is not just for show. The 24 MW thermal backup still exists, but it is being used less and less.

83.5% renewables for an off-grid mine is solid, but I would want the capacity factors for those four wind turbines and the 27 MW solar array. The 15 MW/33 MWh battery is only about two hours of storage, so the diesel or gas backup still has to handle lulls.

The net zero claim depends on buying Australian carbon credits. That part needs more detail. Which standard, what vintage, are they removals or offsets? The renewable generation is clear, but the carbon credit quality decides whether the 'green gold' label holds up.

This is a good example of demand pulling clean supply. A cathedral in London choosing Australian gold because of the mine's renewable mix and carbon credits shows low-carbon commodities can carry a premium. Other miners will notice.
