Australia Streamlines EPBC Assessment for Browse Carbon Capture and Storage Project
nationaltribune.com.auThe Australian government has decided that the Browse Carbon Capture and Storage Project in Western Australia will be assessed entirely under the national Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. This move consolidates what was previously a split regulatory process for offshore CCS projects, aiming to provide clearer rules for proponents and a more thorough environmental review under the updated EPBC Act. State and territory approvals are still required separately. Separately, the department accepted a reconsideration request from the Australian Conservation Foundation regarding a 2019 referral decision on the Browse to North West Shelf Development project. The request is now open for public comment for 20 business days before a final decision on whether to uphold or replace the original referral. This procedural step does not yet change the project's status but signals ongoing scrutiny from environmental groups.
