Australia's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 2.1 percent to 458.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in the year ending December 2025. The decline was primarily driven by a 3.8 percent drop in electricity emissions due to record renewable energy generation and a 5.2 percent decrease in fugitive emissions from natural gas and coal mining. While electricity and transport emissions saw declines, industrial process emissions rose by 3.0 percent due to increased steel production. Total emissions are now 24.5 percent below 2005 levels, tracking toward the national target of a 43 percent reduction by 2030.
