The Australian government has made a new method under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme called Improved Forest Management in Multiple-use Public Native Forests (INFM). The method allows state governments to earn carbon credits by ceasing planned commercial harvesting in defined areas of public native forests. It aims to increase carbon storage, avoid emissions from logging and post-harvest burning, and protect biodiversity. The method was developed by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, based on advice from the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee (ERAC). The ERAC conducted public consultation in January 2026 and provided advice to the Assistant Minister. The government made the method determination on 25 June 2026. Participation is voluntary, and the method includes provisions to account for carbon leakage to ensure conservative carbon storage estimates.
