Australia launches net zero construction centre at Western Sydney University to cut building emissions and waste
climatecontrolnews.com.auAustralia's built environment accounts for roughly 31 percent of national greenhouse gas emissions and generates about 26.8 million tonnes of construction waste each year. A new research centre at Western Sydney University called the ARC ITTC NØBEL Centre aims to change that by combining digital tools, low-carbon materials, and industry training to help the construction sector deliver net-zero buildings. The centre will focus on five themes: industrialisation, resilience, decarbonisation, digitalisation, and integration. It builds on existing work like CO2 Concrete, a technology that stores carbon dioxide in recycled construction materials to produce high-performance low-carbon concrete. The initiative also supports PhD candidates working on real-world challenges in low-carbon construction and advanced manufacturing. Officially launched in July 2026 with backing from the Australian Research Council, the centre targets economic opportunities where Australia has a comparative advantage in low-emission materials. These innovations are expected to strengthen the building industry's competitiveness and contribute an estimated $135 billion annually.
