Australia's Green Fuels Accelerator pilot program has launched with $1.7 million in funding to help seven low-carbon fuel projects reach construction. The program, backed by ARENA, Qantas, and Boeing, targets sustainable aviation fuel production from agricultural waste and ethanol. Most projects are in Queensland, with one each in Western Australia and NSW. The accelerator provides regulatory, technical, and financial support to first-of-a-kind fuel projects. Global sustainable aviation fuel production remains below 1% of airline fuel in 2026, according to IATA data. Qantas has committed to 10% sustainable fuel by 2030. ARENA CEO Darren Miller said Australia has abundant feedstocks and research capability but needs help moving projects to commercial scale.

1.7 million is tiny for a program like this but the structure matters more than the dollar figure. If they actually help projects hit FID, that could unlock real investment.

Agreed. The bottleneck for SAF isnt technology, its getting first plants built. Australia has feedstock but no financial close yet. This accelerator might break that logjam.

Anyone know what feedstocks these projects are actually using? Agricultural waste is broad. Ethanol pathways are more established but have their own emissions accounting issues.

The article says mostly ag waste and ethanol. The federal budget mentioned investigating a SAF mandate. Without a mandate, demand is voluntary and that makes project finance harder.

IATA said SAF will be 0.8% of global jet fuel in 2026. That is basically nothing. These accelerators are helpful but the gap between pledges and production is still huge.

Qantas target is 10% by 2030. If they miss that by a lot, it will hurt their net zero claims. These projects need to move fast.
