Australia has cleared a $3 billion POSCO-led project to build a low-carbon hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant in the Pilbara. HBI is a key steelmaking feedstock, and producing it with lower-emission processes could meaningfully cut emissions from iron and steel supply chains. The approval moves one of the largest industrial decarbonization efforts in Australia forward, though the project still needs a final investment decision. The announcement does not yet specify how the plant will source clean power or hydrogen, which are the main factors that will determine how low-carbon the HBI actually is. The Pilbara has strong solar resources, but a project of this scale will require significant new transmission and possibly gas backup. Those details will decide whether this is a genuine shift or just a marginal efficiency gain.
