Australia Approves 150 Renewable Projects Since 2022, Including 1.4 GW Bungaban Wind Farm in Queensland
miragenews.comAustralia's Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water says more than 150 renewable energy projects have received environmental approval since May 2022, including 50 in Queensland. The approved pipeline covers 64 solar farms, 34 onshore wind farms, 20 energy storage systems, and 14 transmission projects. Together they are expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 84 million tonnes of CO2 per year, roughly equal to taking 27.6 million cars off the road. The milestone projects include the 500 MW Bungaban Solar Project and the 1.4 GW Bungaban Wind Farm in Queensland's Western Downs. The solar project was approved in 20 business days on previously cleared land, while the wind farm is tied to the National Renewable Energy Priority List and the Capacity Investment Scheme. It is expected to support around 1000 construction jobs and help power the Boyne aluminium smelter in Gladstone as that facility moves away from coal. Approval is only one step in the delivery chain. The real test will be whether these projects secure financing, transmission capacity, and construction timelines that match the government's targets.
