The African Union and the African Capacity Building Foundation trained more than 80 ambassadors, senior diplomats, and policy experts at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa. The program is part of the Africa Action Plan on Carbon Markets adopted in 2025. It aims to help African countries negotiate better terms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and capture a larger share of global carbon finance. Topics covered included compliance versus voluntary markets, the EU Emissions Trading System, community rights, and benefit sharing mechanisms. Africa holds massive carbon sequestration potential but currently accounts for a small fraction of global carbon credit trade. The training focused on building technical and negotiating capacity so diplomats can present a unified position in future climate talks. Organizers said stronger governance and transparent benefit sharing are essential to ensure carbon revenues actually reach local communities and support sustainable development. The program received support from Azerbaijan's development agency.
