Atome has chosen Sungrow Hydrogen to supply alkaline electrolysers for its Villeta project in Paraguay. The facility aims to produce 260,000 tonnes of low-carbon Calcium Ammonium Nitrate fertiliser per year. The project will utilize 110MW of electrolyser capacity powered by renewable baseload energy from the Itaipu Dam. This integration of hydropower and green hydrogen production highlights a practical path for decarbonizing industrial fertilizer manufacturing.

110MW is a decent scale, but the real win here is the baseload hydro from Itaipu. Most green hydrogen projects struggle with intermittency from wind or solar. Using a dam keeps the electrolysers running steady. I wonder what the actual capacity factor will be once they hit full production.
The baseload aspect is key, but the bigger question is the carbon accounting. To call this low-carbon fertilizer, they need a rigorous certification for the hydrogen. If they are just using existing hydro credits, it is one thing. If they are adding new capacity, that is another.
Atome is moving fast on this. Using alkaline tech from Sungrow instead of PEM suggests they are prioritizing cost and proven scale over flexibility. It makes sense for a fertilizer plant where the demand for hydrogen is constant.
Maintenance is the part people forget. The press release mentions a Long Term Service Agreement, which is smart. These electrolysers take a beating in industrial settings. I want to see the actual uptime numbers after a year of operation.
