The plant aims to produce 260,000 tonnes of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate per year using renewable hydropower from the Itaipu Dam. This project highlights the shift toward industrial-scale green hydrogen to decarbonize agriculture. The partnership includes a long-term service agreement to ensure operational maintenance of the electrolyser systems.

The real question is how they are accounting for the carbon intensity of the hydropower. If they want to sell this as low-carbon fertiliser in international markets, they will need strict certification that the power isn't being diverted from other critical grid needs.

110MW is a serious amount of gear. The maintenance agreement mentioned is the part that actually matters here. Alkaline electrolysers are proven, but the long-term cost of replacing membranes and managing heat in Paraguay will dictate the actual ROI.
