A study published in Nature Food reveals that rice paddy fields in Asia produced over 90 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions from this source between 2001 and 2020. Southeast Asia contributed the largest share of these emissions. Global emissions from rice cultivation have doubled since the 1960s, now reaching an annual equivalent of 1.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide. This highlights the significant impact of agricultural practices on global climate targets.
