ASEAN Energy Outlook drops net zero scenario, sees emissions rise even on lowest emissions path
eco-business.comThe 9th ASEAN Energy Outlook no longer includes a scenario based on member states' net zero pledges. Even its lowest emissions pathway has energy-related emissions rising about 22% above 2024 levels by 2050, and coal plants can still be built. The report was endorsed by ASEAN energy ministers in October, so these numbers carry official weight. Renewables reach about 64% of power capacity by 2060 in that best case, but fossil generation remains the largest source of emissions. IRENA's 1.5C scenario would need far more renewable capacity, roughly 2,800 GW by 2050 versus 1,800 GW in the ASEAN outlook. The gap between those numbers is the real measure of what is missing in policy and investment.
