Asahi Kasei gets third-party verification for acrylonitrile carbon footprint at Ulsan plant
hydrocarbonprocessing.comAsahi Kasei's South Korean subsidiary Tongsuh Petrochemical has received Reasonable Assurance verification from Socotec Certification Japan for the product carbon footprint of acrylonitrile made at its Ulsan site. The audit covers fiscal 2025 data from raw material procurement through production, giving buyers a verified number rather than a self-reported estimate. Acrylonitrile is used in ABS resins, acrylic fibers, and carbon fiber precursor materials, so this data matters across several downstream supply chains. Tongsuh has held ISCC PLUS certification since 2021 and has used biomass-derived propylene with a mass-balance approach since 2022. Asahi Kasei says it will continue reducing emissions through catalyst and process improvements while expanding bio-based feedstock use. The announcement does not include the actual carbon footprint figure or methodology details, so buyers may need more specifics on scope and allocation rules before comparing suppliers, but the verification step itself is a useful move toward consistent, independently checked carbon data.
