Researchers from University of Galway and French partners have placed 23 3D-printed artificial reefs off the Irish and French coasts to restore cold-water coral habitats damaged by bottom trawling. The reefs, made from low-carbon concrete with volcanic material, have been colonized by sea urchins, crabs, and fish, and coral fragments from last year are still alive. The project, part of the EU's Horizon Europe Redress initiative, tests whether active restoration can accelerate recovery that would otherwise take centuries. Monitoring continues next year, with attention on coral growth and the role of protected areas.
