ARENA has committed up to $45 million to Sicona Battery Technologies under the Battery Breakthrough Initiative. The funding will build a commercial-scale demonstration facility in the Illawarra region, possibly at BlueScope's Port Kembla site. Sicona's SiCx silicon-carbon anode material aims to boost battery energy density by 20 percent and cut charging time by up to 40 percent compared to standard graphite, while staying compatible with existing lithium-ion production lines. The project is expected to create 36 skilled manufacturing jobs and help Australia move beyond raw mineral exports into advanced materials production. Sicona says the mechanical process used to make SiCx is safer and cheaper than silane-based methods. The company has already sent samples to global battery and EV makers for evaluation. If the demonstration succeeds, it could strengthen Australia's position in the battery supply chain and support faster EV adoption through better performing, lower cost cells.
