A startup called Arcturus says it has developed a way to laser bond carbon nanomaterials to copper and aluminum, which could cut electrical grid losses by roughly half. The company claims the same wire sizes can carry more current because the material reduces heat-related conductivity loss, adding up to 10% extra capacity during peak loads. This could mean less wasted energy and lower cooling needs for data centers, drones, and electric vehicles. Arcturus has raised $8 million in seed funding from investors including Breakthrough Energy Discovery and Toyota Ventures. The company is currently scaling from small wire samples to tens of meters for testing in motor windings and busbars. If the technology holds up in larger-scale trials, it could offer a practical way to improve grid efficiency without replacing existing infrastructure or retraining workers.
