As the Arctic warms, some areas may become carbon sources through permafrost thaw while others become sinks through peat expansion. The net effect remains uncertain. For carbon market participants, this underscores the importance of timescale in natural carbon removal projects. Peatland protection and restoration can prevent emissions, but relying on new peat formation to offset current fossil fuel use is not realistic within human timeframes.
