Arctial moving from pre-feasibility to detailed planning. Key question is the power source. Finland has decent hydro and nuclear, but a new smelter is a massive load. Hope they secured a PPA that actually adds new renewables, not just takes existing low-carbon juice.

Good point. Kokkola region has some wind, but a smelter of this scale would need something like 1 GW baseload. Even with hydro, that's a lot of firming. Wonder if they plan to run flexibly or just draw from the Nordic grid and call it green.

The article mentions 'low-carbon' but doesn't give a target carbon intensity per tonne. That matters a lot for CBAM and for actual climate impact. If it's just grid average, it's not much different from existing production in Norway or Iceland.

CBAM is the key driver here. If Arctial can get below the EU benchmark for aluminium (around 1.5 tCO2/t), they avoid the carbon border adjustment cost entirely. That's a real competitive advantage vs imports from China or the Middle East. But they need to prove the emissions.

Aluminium smelters are huge energy hogs. Even with clean power, the process emissions from the anode reactions are unavoidable unless they use inert anodes. Is Arctial planning to use that tech? Article doesn't say. That's the difference between 'low-carbon' and actually near-zero.
