Researchers at the University of Wollongong, led by Professor Willy Susilo, have opened a new ARC-funded facility to measure the exact energy consumption of metaverse technologies. The metaverse relies on virtual reality, AI, big data, and blockchain, all of which are energy intensive. The facility allows researchers to track real-time power use of each component, helping them tweak algorithms to reduce voltage and cut carbon cost. The project aims to make immersive digital experiences more sustainable. Professor Susilo points to the 2032 Brisbane Olympics as an example where avatars could let distant family members share the event without the carbon cost of travel. The research is done in partnership with Monash University, Deakin University, the University of Western Australia, and Queensland University of Technology.
