Vegetation regrowth has offset less than 1% of the carbon loss, meaning the basin's carbon balance has flipped from net sink to net source over roughly 50 years. The study argues that reflooding the lake could slow carbon release and potentially generate high-integrity carbon credits through avoided emissions and renewed storage. This case highlights a blind spot in climate accounting: shrinking lakes must be tracked as emission sources, not just land-use changes.
