Aqua Pennsylvania gets $74.3M for PFAS water treatment plant treating 15M gallons daily

Aqua Pennsylvania received $74.3 million in PENNVEST funding to build PFAS treatment systems, including a granular activated carbon plant at the Neshaminy Water Treatment Plant that will treat 15 million gallons of drinking water per day. The plant serves about 62,000 customers in Montgomery and Bucks counties. Construction is expected to finish by late summer 2028. Additional funding will support PFAS treatment at three well sites in Chester and Luzerne counties, impacting nearly 5,700 customers. Since 2021, Aqua Pennsylvania has secured over $270 million from PENNVEST for infrastructure upgrades. The projects aim to meet federal drinking water standards for PFAS, also known as forever chemicals.

15 MGD with GAC is a decent sized system. Wonder what the operational energy draw is for that. Pumps and regeneration cycles add up.

GAC is energy intensive but still better than reverse osmosis for PFAS. EPA rules are driving this. Expect more of these announcements.

Well sites finishing in 2027 are faster. At least some customers get relief sooner.
