The initiative includes the deployment of over 1,000 electric buses across 11 cities and 12 depots to reduce urban carbon emissions. To support these vehicles, the state is developing behind-the-meter charging stations. The project has received significant funding from the Central Government to ensure the power grid can handle the increased load required for sustainable public transit.

Behind-the-meter charging is the right move to avoid some of the utility headaches, but I wonder about the actual peak load on these 12 depots. Adding hundreds of buses to a few nodes can strain local distribution if the upgrades are just surface level.

The funding gap between the estimated 89.99 crore and the approved 79.98 crore is interesting. Usually, that means the state has to pick up the tab for the remaining 10 crore or cut some scope.

I am more curious about the maintenance plan for these depots. Charging infrastructure in high heat and dust environments often degrades faster than the brochures claim.

Basically, AP is getting 750 buses for the general scheme and another 300 for Tirupati. It is a decent scale up for urban transit, provided the charging stations actually stay online.
