APM Terminals Electrifies Nigerian Ports: Green Logistics and eRTG Cranes at WACT Onne

APM Terminals is converting the West Africa Container Terminal in Onne, Nigeria into the country's first green port. The plan includes electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes, digital systems to cut truck idling, and partnerships to shift cargo from roads to waterways. Chief Commercial Officer Westtar Kapito outlined the investments at the Nigeria-EU Business Forum, framing them as a move to reduce diesel use and prepare for stricter shipping emissions rules. The shift matters beyond Nigeria. Ports across Africa, including Mombasa, face similar pressure to adopt zero-emission equipment and shore power. If APM Terminals follows through, it could set a template for electrifying heavy port equipment across the continent. The real test will be whether the grid can handle the load and whether the upgrades stay on schedule.
