Equinor is using ANYmal, a four-legged autonomous robot from ANYbotics, to monitor its Northern Lights carbon transport and storage site in Norway. The robot uses thermal imaging and acoustic sensors to detect micro leakages of CO2 and other gases, reducing the need for human crews to enter hazardous environments. Beyond safety, the technology helps improve operational efficiency by identifying energy waste from compressed air leaks. ANYbotics is also developing an explosion-proof version of the robot for use in high-risk chemical and oil and gas facilities.

Cutting worker exposure by 70 to 90 percent is the real win here. I am curious about the actual maintenance cost of these robots in salt-heavy coastal environments like the North Sea. Hardware wears down fast in those conditions.

Agreed. The salt spray will eat those joints. Also, does the robot have enough battery life to cover the full site without constant docking, or is it just doing short loops?

From a regulatory side, this is interesting for MRV. If these robots provide a continuous, digitized map of gas concentrations, it makes the reporting for carbon credits much more robust than occasional manual checks.

True, but the data is only as good as the AI flagging the anomalies. If the model misses a leak, the reporting is still wrong. I want to see the precision rates for these acoustic sensors.
