Antora's 5.8 GWh carbon block thermal battery will supply heat to Kansas ethanol plant
autonocion.comAntora Energy is expanding its thermal storage footprint. The company's second large project is a 5.8 GWh system for Pratt Energy's ethanol plant in Pratt, Kansas, with heat deliveries expected to start next year. The first system, a 5 GWh installation at POET's ethanol plant in Big Stone City, South Dakota, has been supplying 50 MW around the clock since May. Thermal batteries store electricity as heat in carbon blocks heated to 4,352 degrees Fahrenheit. They charge when power is cheap and release heat when the plant needs it, replacing natural gas for industrial processes like cooking mash and drying distillers grains. For ethanol producers, lower emissions translate into a lower carbon intensity score, which can earn credits in markets like California. The Kansas deal also shows how the financing works. Pratt Energy will pay Antora for heat over a long-term contract, while Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Grok Ventures, and University Pension Plan Ontario provided outside equity. The missing detail is the power rating for the Kansas system, which Antora has not published yet.
