Antora Energy's 5.8 GWh Thermal Battery at Kansas Ethanol Plant Backed by CIP, Grok Ventures
carboncredits.comAntora Energy is building a 5.8 GWh thermal energy storage system at Pratt Energy's ethanol biorefinery in Pratt, Kansas. The project will store electricity as heat in carbon blocks and supply around-the-clock heat and power to the facility under a long-term offtake agreement. Backers include Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Grok Ventures, and University Pension Plan Ontario. Antora says the system could help Pratt produce ethanol with a zero-carbon-intensity profile and cut reliance on fossil heat. It follows a 5 GWh thermal storage system in Big Stone City, South Dakota. The company expects the Kansas project to support more than 100 construction and operations jobs. The deal shows how storage is moving beyond short-duration lithium-ion grid batteries into industrial heat. Thermal batteries can absorb low-cost renewable power and deliver heat when needed, which matters for chemicals, food production, and biofuels.
