Anthropic has committed $915 million to Frontier, a carbon removal collective originally founded by Google and Stripe. The funding doubles Frontier's size and will support technologies like direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering through long-term offtake agreements. Frontier uses an Advanced Market Commitment model to guarantee future demand for carbon removal credits, aiming to scale solutions to a gigaton level by 2030. The market for carbon removal has grown substantially, with 49 million credits sold for roughly $12 billion. Frontier's second funding tranche will focus on projects with clear pathways and government backing, targeting 8-10 year agreements with 10-15 companies. This marks the first major commitment from an AI company to the initiative, signaling broader tech sector interest in permanent carbon removal as regulations push companies to neutralize emissions.
