AnorTech partners with National Research Council of Canada on carbon capture catalysts using sustainable alumina

AnorTech Inc. has entered a one year research collaboration with Canada's National Research Council to develop alumina based catalysts for CO2 capture. The project will test amine functionalized alumina adsorbents under real world conditions, including varying temperatures, humidity, and simulated flue gas. AnorTech is supplying sustainable alumina from its Greenland anorthosite project and jointly funding the work. The collaboration builds on 2025 testing where AnorTech supplied multiple alumina grades to the NRC for catalysts that capture CO2 and convert it to methane via hydrogenation. The goal is to identify breakthrough formulations ready for large scale carbon capture deployment. AnorTech is also advancing zero waste smelter grade alumina and high purity alumina production from its Gronne Bjerg project in Greenland.

Interesting that they are focusing on amine functionalized alumina for CO2 capture. The real test will be if the adsorbents hold up under cyclic conditions with real flue gas.

The methane hydrogenation step is the part that matters. If they can get high conversion rates and low energy input, this could be a solid DAC or point source solution.

One year timeline for R and D on catalysts is short. Usually you need multiple cycles of synthesis and testing. Hope they have realistic milestones.

The NRC involvement gives it credibility. But the real bottleneck is scaling from lab to pilot. AnorTech has shipped 15 tonnes of anorthosite for pilot testing already.

Alumina based sorbents are not new. The question is whether their sustainable alumina actually performs better than commodity grades. If not, the cost premium might not be justified.
