Ankur Scientific Panel on Industrial Decarbonisation: Biomass Gasification, Biochar and Carbon Removal in India
energetica-india.netAnkur Scientific hosted a virtual panel discussion on industrial decarbonisation, focusing on carbon avoidance and carbon capture as twin pathways for hard-to-abate sectors like cement, steel, chemicals, ceramics, and glass. The panel highlighted biomass gasification as a way to replace fossil fuels in high-temperature kilns and furnaces, while producing biochar that can store carbon long term. It also pointed to the Morbi ceramic cluster's fuel supply disruptions as evidence that imported gas dependence is both a climate risk and a business risk. The discussion covered India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme and the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, noting that emissions now carry a financial cost for Indian industry. Ankur Scientific says its gasifiers run at over 90 percent efficiency, yield more than 25 percent biochar, and can process over 60 feedstocks. The company also reported 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 reduced, 350,000 MWh of green energy generated, and 185,000 tonnes of carbon sequestered since inception. Recent projects include a cement-sector installation, an industrial biochar and steam project, and a cotton stalk biochar carbon removal project in India.
