Andover Opinion: Swap Fireworks for Drone Shows to Cut Air Pollution and Improve Access
andovermanews.comAn Andover resident is asking the town to keep using drone shows instead of fireworks. Kathy Grant wrote a letter to Andover News after the drone display at RevFest 250, saying it was quieter, visually strong, and easier for people with sound sensitivity, epilepsy, asthma, and other conditions to enjoy. She also notes that fireworks release metal particles and gases that can worsen air quality. Fireworks are a known source of short-term air pollution spikes. Grant cites a 42% increase in air pollution, with smoke containing magnesium, strontium, lithium, copper, and gases like carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. For people with asthma or COPD, that often means staying indoors. Drones, by contrast, run on electricity and do not put that smoke into the air at ground level. The letter frames the choice as both an accessibility issue and an environmental one. Andover already has commissions focused on disability, diversity, and inclusion, so the argument fits existing town priorities. If local officials agree, replacing fireworks with drones could become a recurring part of public event planning.
