Andhra Pradesh has secured fifth place nationally in both land restoration and carbon sequestration, according to India's Second Progress Report on the Bonn Challenge. Between 2011 and 2020, the state restored 1.61 million hectares of land, sequestering an estimated 19.79 million tonnes of carbon after accounting for mortality. The restoration also generated 48.28 million person-days of employment and attracted investments of Rs 9,255.4 million, primarily from domestic public sources. However, the report highlights ongoing challenges: 14.84% of the state's geographical area remains affected by desertification and land degradation, with an increase of 79,283 hectares between 2011-13 and 2018-19 due to water erosion and vegetation degradation. The state's forest carbon stock stands at 230.22 million tonnes, equivalent to 844.14 million tonnes of CO2. These numbers underscore both progress and the scale of work still needed in landscape restoration.

The article mentions IPCC LULUCF methodology for carbon estimates. That is solid. But mortality adjustment dropping from 26.39 to 19.79 MtC is a 25% haircut. That is worth noting.

The 25% mortality adjustment is standard in forest carbon accounting. What matters more is whether the sequestration is additional and permanent. Without that, these numbers are just inventory.

48 million person-days of employment over a decade. That is about 13k full time equivalent jobs per year. Not bad for a restoration program, but I wonder about wage levels and duration.

Degraded area still increasing by 79k hectares even as they restore. That suggests they are losing ground somewhere else. Need to see the net change, not just gross restoration.
