ANA and JAL Joint Report Highlights Global SAF Shortage and Japan's Decarbonization Strategy

Japan's leading airlines, ANA and JAL, have released a joint report warning that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) accounted for only 0.6% of global aviation fuel in 2025. The report emphasizes that without a rapid increase in production and cost reductions over the next five years, the industry will struggle to meet 2050 net-zero emissions targets. To address this, the airlines propose a Japanese model that aligns regulatory mandates with actual domestic production capacity. They are also promoting a co-creation model to share the high costs of SAF implementation across society and corporate Scope 3 emissions programs.
