Amey rolls out longer lasting steel barriers to cut road closures and carbon emissions on UK highways

Amey is installing a new generation of safety barriers across National Highways roads in the UK. The barriers use pre-galvanised steel that resists corrosion better than traditional designs, meaning they need fewer repairs and replacements over their lifetime. That translates into fewer lane closures and less disruption for drivers. The company says the barriers also have lower embodied carbon compared to conventional alternatives. Fewer site visits for maintenance mean less fuel burned by work vehicles and less material waste. This fits into National Highways' plan to reach net zero emissions across its network. Amey is rolling out the barriers in phases as part of regular maintenance work, so there is no extra disruption for road users. The project is a partnership with barrier manufacturer Hill & Smith VRS. It is a practical example of how materials choice and durability can cut both carbon and congestion at the same time.
