Ambuja Cements partners with UK's Leilac for commercial-scale low carbon cement plant in Gujarat
lokmattimes.comAmbuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-based clean tech firm Leilac to build one of the world's largest commercial-scale low-carbon cement production facilities at Sanghipuram in Kutch, Gujarat. The project aims to integrate Leilac's carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technology to reduce process emissions and eventually eliminate coal use. If successful, the plant could be scaled up to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 annually. The initiative supports Ambuja Cements' SBTi-validated net zero target for 2050. The company is also expanding its captive renewable energy capacity to nearly 1 GW to power the electrification of cement manufacturing. This collaboration could improve the economics of carbon capture and provide a replicable model for the global cement industry, which accounts for roughly 8% of global CO2 emissions.
