Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK cleantech firm Leilac to build a commercial-scale low-carbon cement plant at Sanghipuram in Kutch, Gujarat. The project will test Leilac's carbon capture technology combined with a hybrid electric heating system, aiming to cut emissions from cement production. If successful, Ambuja plans to scale the project 7 to 8 times to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 per year, supporting its SBTi-validated net-zero target for 2050. The partnership focuses on making carbon capture economically viable for the cement industry. By relying more on renewable electricity and reducing coal use, the technology could provide a replicable model for other plants in India and globally. Ambuja already has close to 1 GW of green power capacity, which underpins this shift toward electrified, lower-emission manufacturing. The project is a concrete step in the global cement industry's move away from heavy carbon emissions.
