Ambuja Cements partners with Leilac for low-carbon cement and carbon capture at Gujarat plant

Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-based clean technology company Leilac to develop a commercial-scale low-carbon cement project at its Sanghipuram plant in Kutch, Gujarat. The project will use carbon capture technology and hybrid electric heating to reduce emissions from cement production, which is one of the largest industrial sources of carbon dioxide. The company says the technology could potentially reduce coal use to zero and allow flexible use of alternative fuels. The commercial demonstration project will be set up at Ambuja's 6.6 million tonnes per annum plant. If successful, it could be expanded 7 to 8 times, potentially capturing more than 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. The initiative supports Ambuja's Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated net-zero target for 2050. The company is also expanding renewable energy use with nearly 1 GW of captive green power to support future carbon capture solutions.
