Ambuja Cements partners with Leilac for commercial-scale low-carbon cement project in Gujarat

Ambuja Cements has teamed up with UK-based clean tech firm Leilac to test carbon capture and hybrid electrification at its Sanghi cement plant in Gujarat. The goal is to cut process emissions, lower fuel use, and shift more operations to renewable electricity. The company says nearly one gigawatt of captive green power will support the transition. If the pilot works, Ambuja plans to scale the technology seven to eight times, capturing over one million tonnes of CO2 per year. That would make it one of the largest industrial carbon capture facilities globally. The project supports Ambuja's Science Based Targets initiative commitment to reach net zero by 2050. The cement sector is one of the hardest industries to decarbonize because emissions come from both fuel combustion and the chemical process itself. This partnership aims to show a commercially viable path for low-carbon cement that could be replicated across the industry.
