Ambuja Cements has partnered with UK-based Leilac to test advanced carbon capture and hybrid electric heating at its Sanghipuram plant in Gujarat. The pilot targets process emissions from clinker production, which account for a large share of cement sector CO2. If successful, the project could scale to capture over 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually and support Ambuja's net-zero by 2050 goal. The partnership aims to eliminate coal use at the site by integrating electric heating with carbon capture. This is one of the larger industrial CCUS pilots in India and could set a template for other cement plants in the region. The outcome will depend on cost, energy supply, and the ability to scale the technology beyond demonstration phase.
