Ambuja Cements and Leilac Partner on Renewable Energy Low-Carbon Cement with Carbon Capture in Gujarat

Ambuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with Leilac to develop a low-carbon cement project in Gujarat. The project will use renewable energy to power production and integrate carbon capture technology to reduce emissions from cement manufacturing, a major source of industrial CO2. Cement production accounts for roughly 8% of global CO2 emissions, with most coming from the chemical process of making clinker. Leilac's technology captures CO2 directly from the kiln without major changes to the existing plant layout. Powering the process with renewables could lower the overall carbon footprint of the final product. This partnership is a concrete step toward decarbonizing hard-to-abate industrial sectors. If successful, it could serve as a model for other cement plants in India and elsewhere looking to cut emissions while maintaining output.
