Ambuja Cements and Leilac partner on low-carbon cement project in Gujarat using carbon capture technology

Ambuja Cements has partnered with UK-based clean tech firm Leilac to develop a commercial-scale low-carbon cement production project at its Sanghipuram plant in Gujarat. The project will test Leilac's carbon capture and hybrid electrification technology, which aims to cut emissions, reduce coal use to zero, and increase the use of renewable electricity in cement manufacturing. The first phase focuses on technical and commercial feasibility before any investment decisions are made. No cost commitments have been announced yet. If successful, the project could be scaled up to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 annually. The partnership supports Ambuja's SBTi-validated net-zero target for 2050 and builds on its captive green power capacity of nearly 1 GW. This initiative could establish a scalable pathway for low-carbon cement in India and beyond. The cement industry is a major source of industrial emissions, so projects like this are critical for decarbonization.
