Ambuja Cements and Leilac partner on commercial-scale low-carbon cement project in India
megaproject.comAmbuja Cements, part of the Adani Group, has partnered with UK-based Leilac to build a commercial-scale low-carbon cement demonstration at its Sanghi plant in Gujarat, India. The project will test Leilac's carbon capture and electric heating technology on a 6.6 million tonne per annum facility, aiming to cut coal use to zero and capture unavoidable process CO2. If the demonstration succeeds, the partners plan to scale the system 7 to 8 times to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 annually. Ambuja already backs the effort with nearly 1 GW of captive renewable power and a net zero target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The project could provide a replicable model for reducing emissions from cement, one of the hardest industries to decarbonize.
